And the Most Popular YouTube Video of 2009 Is…

…and we’re talking most popular by far, with more than 120 million views: Susan Boyle’s astonishing performance at Britain’s Got Talent. This is hardly a surprise, given the enormous buzz the video has caused. Because it’s basically a reprise of Paul Potts’s performance from 2007, one has to wonder whether Britain’s Got Talent — with its “surprising” discovery of hidden talents — will continue its YouTube reign in 2010, too.

Susan Boyle’s performance is followed by “David After Dentist” with more than 37 million views, “JK Wedding Entrance Dance” with more than 33 million views, the trailer for the New Moon movie with 31 million views and “Evian Roller Babies” in the fifth place with more than 27 million views.

Besides the top five videos watched globally on the service, the folks at YouTube also listed the top five music videos of 2009, as well as the fastest rising search terms per month (both globally and for the U.S.). The list of popular search terms reads like a very condensed history of 2009:

January: inauguration

February: christian bale

March: the climb

April: susan boyle

May: pacquiao vs hatton

June: michael jackson thriller

July: michael jackson

August: usain bolt

September: kanye west

October: paranormal activity

November: bad romance

December: tiger woods

Yup, that’s pretty much how I remember it.

Adam Lambert’s AMA Performance Is the Britney/Madonna Makeout 2.0 [VIDEO]

It wouldn’t be an award show without some sort of bizarre and shocking moment that gets the Internet abuzz, and last night’s American Music Awards were no exception.

The talk of the show this time is Adam Lambert’s (who you may remember from American Idol) performance, in which he kisses another guy towards the end.

The event is still the talk of the Web this morning, bringing back memories of the infamous Britney Spears and Madonna makeout from the 2003 VMAs which pre-dates both YouTube and Twitter (nonetheless, the clip still has 5 million views).

At the moment, video of the Lambert performance does not seem to be available on ABC’s (who aired the AMA’s) website, though the clip is on YouTube (below). Whether or not that’s an editorial or technical decision, we’re not yet sure, but you may recall that MTV reaped a massive traffic boost from keeping the Kanye West/Taylor Swift incident off of YouTube and in its own player earlier this year.

It’ll be interesting to see how long the buzz surrounding Lambert’s pushing-the-envelope performance lasts given the vastly different media landscape that exists just a few years after the infamous Britney/Madonna moment. Feel free to share your thoughts about it in the comments.

Taylor Swift on SNL: Kanye West Fails to Interrupt [VIDEO]

For those hoping for a re-enactment of the Kanye/Taylor Swift viral video that became an Internet meme, SNL didn’t deliver the goods last night. There was, however, a nod to one of the biggest Internet fads of the year, as guest host Taylor Swift included a mention of the event in her “Monologue Song” (video below).

For those wishing to relive the meme one more time, check out our Top 10 Kanye West Interruption Parodies.

For international viewers, versions of the clip are still available on YouTube.

Taylor Swift to Host SNL: Here’s the First Kanye Joke [VIDEO]

One of the top Internet memes of 2009 is likely going to get a shot of new life this weekend as Taylor Swift hosts Saturday Night Live.

Of course, we’re talking about Kanye West’s interruption of the singer at the MTV Video Music Awards that spawned countless “I’ma let you finish” parodies, Halloween costumes, and even the use of the word “jackass” by the President.

NBC has just released the first preview for the show, which, you guessed it, alludes to one of the greatest viral video moments of all-time. We won’t ruin the punch line for you, but you can probably guess what it is. Here’s the video:

The Top Internet Memes of 2009

The instantaneous and shareable nature of the Internet is one of the things that separates it from other mediums. Viral videos and Internet memes can take hold and spread quickly. Thanks to social networking, the speed in which the latest phenomena can spread is lightning fast. More and more frequently, Internet memes are making appearances in other more traditional media like TV and film.

With only two months left of 2009, we thought we would look back at some of the biggest Internet memes of the year. Most — if not all — of these memes have inspired spin-offs and secondary memes, and in the process, become a part of our Internet cultural history.

Did we miss any of your favorites? Let us know in the comments!

#1 David After Dentist

One of the first big memes of 2009 was the YouTube video “David After Dentist.” The story is exactly like it sounds. Young David went to the dentist to get a tooth pulled and was treated with some pretty heavy sedatives. Armed with a Flip Cam and a good sense of humor, David’s Dad decided to videotape the aftermath.

Watch here:

#2 Susan Boyle

In April 2009, 47-year old Susan Boyle appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent” and mesmerized the audience (and the judges) with her jaw-droppingly awesome voice.

Once the video hit YouTube, the rest of the world took notice and a true phenomenon was born. With an estimated 100 million views in the first few weeks, Boyle’s performance is one of the top Internet video phenomena of all time.

Sadly, we can’t embed her fantastic debut performance from Les Miserables, but you can watch it here.

#3 United Breaks Guitars

In 2008, United Airlines broke Dave Carroll’s Taylor Guitar. After battling with the airline for months and making no progress, Carroll decided to take action. He wrote the song and shot the video “United Breaks Guitars” and released it on YouTube in mid 2009. The video earned more than 3 million views in just 10 days.

In August, Carroll released “United Breaks Guitars 2,” but it failed to generate the same buzz as the original.

#4 Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt

At the beginning of Summer 2009, an interesting t-shirt appeared on Amazon.com. Called “Three Wolf Moon,” the shirt featured an awesomely awful emblem of three wolves howling at the moon, the shirt garnered over-the-top reviews on Amazon.com, rating it as the best shirt ever and making outrageous claims about its power.

The shirt became a best-seller and the creators of the shirt are even shopping around a book based on the topic.

In an October episode of NBC’s “The Office,” Dwight K. Schrute wears the shirt and ends up getting pretty lucky with the ladies.

#5 Baby Dancing to Beyonce

This is one of our favorite memes of the year. Featuring baby Cory from New Zealand (then just 13 months old), this video became viral after the VMAs. Little Cory dances to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” with such a level of engrossment and with so much obvious enjoyment, how could it not be a huge hit?

Watch:

#6 JK Wedding Dance

Jill and Kevin’s wedding dance is the rare Internet meme that has two waves of popularity. When the video first hit the web in late July, the awesomely choreographed dance by the wedding party down the aisle during Jill and Kevin’s wedding became a huge hit, especially after being featured on the Today Show.

Then in October, NBC’s “The Office” paid homage to the dance by re-creating it with cast members for Jim and Pam’s fictional TV wedding. The result? The original video had a huge uptick in popularity (probably aided by people who missed it the first time).

Another winner in this meme, embattled R&B star Chris Brown, who saw sales for his single “Forever” (which is featured in both videos) climb the charts after the video’s release.

#7 Christian Bale (Strong Language)

Even before February 2009, there were rumors that all had not gone well on the set of “Terminator: Salvation.” Then in February, someone leaked an audio recording of actor Christian Bale going off on a crew-member. The audio took off online and in the mainstream press.

DJ RevoLucian created “Bale Out – RevoLucian’s Christian Bale Remix” from the audio and a NSFW meme within a meme was born. Not to take anything away from Bale, but he still has nothing on David O. Russell (link has very explicit language).

#8 Balloon Boy

Two weeks ago, a helium filled weather balloon was launched in Colorado, supposedly with a 6-year old boy trapped inside. In under 24-hours, the Internet went from shared bafflement, to fear for the boy’s safety, to relief that he was OK (and hiding in a box the whole time), to questioning if the whole event was a hoax to full-blown Internet meme.

That’s breaking news to Internet in-joke in under 10 hours. Amazing.

A week later, the meme came full-Internet circle with the video “I’m in a Box” (a riff of “I’m on a Boat”), which you can watch below (note NSFW language):

#9 Kanye West at the VMAs

We can all thank Kanye West for providing us so much endless entertainment. After pulling an ODB and hijacking Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, a full-on meme was born. The outburst gave MTV.com a record number of unique video views.

The barrage of parodies and jokes started almost instantaneously. Even President Obama opined on Kanye’s behavior, calling him a “Jackass.”

We won’t lie, we were a little obsessed with the Kanye-meme here at Mashable. Unless something REALLY spectacular happens, this is sure to be the meme of 2009.

If you missed the clip that started it all, watch it below:

Sony Ericsson’s “Rachael” Android UI: Android + Zune HD > iPhone [Android]

I like Android and all, but one thing the iPhone absolutely kicks every other smartphone’s ass at is media playback—until now. This video of Sony Ericsson’s “Rachael” Android UI shows its media capabilities, and it looks un-freaking-believable.

Looks like Sony Ericsson borrowed heavily from the Zune HD playbook for this one, but we’re not complaining—the Zune HD has the only media UI that’s capable of competing with the iPhone’s. Let’s count the influences: First is the homescreen, which has a layout very similar to the Zune HD’s QuickPlay menu. Instead of just giving you a boring list of Artists, Albums, and Snoooore, it shows Favorites (like the Zune HD’s Pins), Recently Added and Recently Played, not-so-coincidentally the exact same options in the Zune HD menu. Below that you get two options from PlayNow, a kind of Pandora-like Sony store, including Top 30 and Recommendations. This stuff is super useful for anyone with a large, frequently-updated media collection.

At the bottom of every screen is a crossbar much like the Zune HD’s, but that one’s legitimate Sony—they pioneered that UI with XMB on PS3 and PSP. It’s a great idea, so we’re glad it shows up here as well. Other Zune HD influences? How about the art on the artist and album pages? When selecting Kanye West from the artist list, a photo of his smug little chipmunk face shows up on the top of the list of albums, and when selecting his album The College Dropout, the album art pops up above the tracklist—just like on the Zune HD.

Of course, a warning before the video says that this is for conceptual and internal use only (whoops!) so for all we know, Rachael’s media playback won’t look anything like this. But we hope it does—Android’s music playback software is embarrassingly dated and this video shows a level of gloss that frankly blows me away. We could be seeing the first smartphone featuring Rachael very soon, too: Like, four days from now soon. We’ve got no idea on carrier, price, capacity, or any other hard details quite yet.

In case that was all too long for you? I want this thing. Right now. [SE-Blog via SE-Nse, thanks Scotsboyuk!]

Real Life iPhone Costumes Put Your Crappy Halloween Outfit to Shame [VIDEO]

Dressing up as Balloon Boy, Kanye West or some other Internet hit this Halloween? Don’t even bother: these real life iPhone costumes already took 1st and 2nd place for best novelty outfits ever.

The costumes took 3 weeks to build, with each weighing 85lbs and requiring a car battery to be worn between the wearer’s legs. An iPhone 3GS is attached to a 42″ LCD screen (not touch screen, alas), turning the wearer into a human-sized iPhone. Co-creator John Savio writes:

This all started two years ago Reko Rivera and Bobby Hartman created a wearable large iPhone costume with a real 37″ lcd tv. An iPod was attached with a looping video of a real iphones screen in normal use. This time with the help of John Savio and John Matthews the team created yet another amazing rendition of the new iPhone 3GS…The team has about $2000 into the two costumes and has no regrets!

Does geekery know no bounds?

Hallow-Meme: Internet-Inspired Halloween Costumes

Don’t have your costume ready for Halloween yet? Internet meme site Know Your Meme wants to help. The site has launched the Hallow-meme Costume Builder, which aids you in creating a Balloon Boy costume, a Kanye West & Taylor Swift outfit (for couples), a Three Wolf Moon costume for three people, and many more besides.

It’s a smart move from Know Your Meme, a spin-off from video-blog Rocketboom: not only does it give the site more visibility this Halloween, but the use of affiliate links means that the site could bring in a few bucks from geeky Halloween revelers.

Balloon Boy Meets The Fresh Prince on Facebook [PIC]

Fed up of Balloon Boy already? You’ve got a long road ahead of you: the story of Falcon Heene, who the world’s media believed to be flying over Colorado in a helium balloon as he hid in an attic, has rapidly become the next big Internet meme.

Twitter users – perhaps pushing the boundaries of good taste – have taken to mashing up the Kanye West “Imma let you finish” joke with the balloon boy meme, with mixed results. Meanwhile, there’s a Zazzle store selling Balloon Boy t-shirts.

Perhaps the funniest reaction to the story we’ve seen comes from Facebook, however: a Facebook status update and subsequent comments evolved into a rewrite of the theme tune to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The result is nothing short of hilarious:

Leona Lewis Attacked in London; Issues Statement on Facebook

News of a disturbing incident in London is spreading around the Web this afternoon. Leona Lewis, singer and winner of the UK’s “X-Factor” program was apparently hit in the face at a book signing.

There aren’t many details available yet about the incident, but the singer, presumably through her team, has already issued a statement on Facebook to her more than 600,000 fans.

“Leona was the victim of an unprovoked attack this afternoon at her book signing. The police were called immediately and medical attention has been sought. Leona is understandably shaken and apologises to the fans she was unable to meet and complete signings,” read a note on her Page.

Fans are quickly adding comments to the post, showing their support and sending well wishes. The immediate reaction is reminiscent of what we’ve seen in other recent unexpected celeb stories, like Kanye West’s VMA outburst, where Taylor Swift’s fan page started growing explosively afterwards.

In this case, we first and foremost hope Lewis recovers quickly, but are once again impressed by the role that social media plays in the aftermath.
