Notion Ink Enters Tablet Wars With Android Device [Tablets]

Notion Ink is apparently readying an Android tablet with a Pixel Qi display—the very same that was rumored to be used in the Apple tablet. Just like at it, it’s like something from our dreams.

Earlier in the month, Pixel Qi’s CEO Mary Lou Jepsen commented that their displays were going to be used in “specialized multi-touch tablet devices,” and shown off at CES. It certainly sounds like she was alluding to this Notion Ink “smartpad,” which SlashGear has an incredibly detailed low-down on.

For now, they’re only showing off renders of the tablet, but it’s enough to pique our interest. Crammed in that silver, MacBook Air-like physique is the aforementioned chip (which will give it a purported 48hr standby battery life, even better than first expected), A-GPS, a digital compass, accelerometer and proximity, and curiously ambient light and water sensors. There’s even a 3.0-megapixel camera with autofocus, capable of recording video.

It’ll be available in 16GB and 32GB SSD options, and will have an SD card slot too.

The transflective Pixel Qi display measures 10.1-inches, and offers 1080p resolution video playback. The rest of the device is 6.3 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches, and weight is listed at 1.7lbs. Connection wise, it has a USB, HDMI, 3.5mm jack and microphone input. With Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, it’s triband on 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA.

Better wipe that saliva from the corner of your mouth, as we’re not likely to hear much more about this Notion Ink creation until early January at CES, when hopefully the pricing will be confirmed too. [SlashGear]

Details on New LG Ultrathin XNote LGX30 Revealed

Are netbooks evolving into ultrathin form factors right before our very eyes? It’s too early to tell, but clearly there’s a market for super thin notebooks, or so it would seem, given the attention manufacturers are putting into the segment. The latest is LG, whose ultrathin XNote LGX30 now appears in the FCC’s database.

Not to be confused with the Ion-based X30, the XNote LGX30 is an 11.6-inch netbook sporting a 1366 x 768 resolution. It comes with an Intel Atom processor inside (no mention of which one), along with a solid state drive, Intel GMA 500 graphics, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and a built-in webcam. Windows 7 ties it all together, and though you can’t see it very well from the pictures, the LGX30 does have a trackpad, which boasts support for multitouch gestures.

A 3-cell battery rounds out the package, bringing the total weight to just 1.74 pounds. No mention on when it will be released, but don’t be surprised to see this one turn up at CES next month.

Onkyo Selling DX Dual-Screen Laptop for Under $1000

We have to admit, this is getting a little ridiculous (in a good way). Not only are 17-inch notebooks routinely checking in at well under a $1,000, but thanks to Onkyo, you can now buy a dual-screen laptop for less than 10 Benjamins.

These aren’t ginormous screens, mind you, but Onkyo’s DX laptop packs two, 10.1-inch screens each running at 1366 x 768. Not earth shattering, but should be enough to satiate mobile warriors looking to extend their desktop beyond what’s typically been possible.

Other hardware includes an AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 2GB of memory (expandable to 4GB), a 320GB hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Windows 7 Home Premium in 32-bit flavor.

So what’s the caveat? You have to live in Japan to pick one up for under $1,000, where it currently sells for ¥84,800 (about $966). Those of us in the U.S. will have to go through GeekStuff4U, where the same model runs $1,195.

Voltron iPhone Game Unfortunately Doesn’t Require Five People To Play [IPhone Apps]

Sony’s Voltron iPhone game looks interesting, because you get to pilot the separate lions in 2/3 isometric view, and in a head to head fighter mode, but ultimately disappointing. Why? Because you can’t get four friends and make a Voltron.

The screenshots also show the inherent problem of having a touchscreen be your screen and your control interface. It’s much worse here, with the buttons taking up a good 1/4 or 1/3 of the real estate. But it is only $4, and if you’re the kind of guy who enjoys games based on series that are more than 20 years old, boy has Sony Pictures got the app for you.

Seriously, how awesome would it be to have 5 person multiplayer over Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, using the iPhone 3.0 SDK, with one person piloting a piece of Voltron? Then you could join together and then do some crazy junk. Pew pew. [iTunes]

Dell’s Vostro V13 is an Ultra-Thin You can Afford

Ultra-thin notebooks tend to be sleek, sexy, and expensive. By our count, that’s two out three desirable qualities, which leaves the door wide open for an OEM to ship an ultra-thin that doesn’t put the hurt on the wallet. Would you have guessed Dell would be the one to step through?

Dell, the same OEM responsible for the $1,500+ Adamo, is making headlines once again for an ultra-thin notebook, only this time the price will be in reach of the mainstream audience. Enter the Vostro V13, a 3.5-pound ultraportable measuring a scant 0.65-inches thick, the same as the Adamo. But at only $449, the Vostro V13 is the third of the price of the least expensive Adamo.

It gets even better. At $450, you’re probably expecting an Intel Atom processor inside, but that isn’t the case. Geared towards business travelers, the 13.3-inch V13 will sport an ultra-low voltage (ULV) Core 2 processor along with 4GB of DDR3 memory. Details remain sparse, but according to reports, it will also ship with Bluetooth and 802.11g/n support, as well as an integrated webcam and microphone.

Color us impressed.

Airlock: Lock Your Mac with Your iPhone or iPod touch via Bluetooth

If you own either an iPhone or iPod touch along with a Mac computer then Airlock may just be the security OS X application you’ve been looking for. For only $7.77 you can have a very effective lock for your Mac computer with just your iPhone or iPod touch.

How does Airlock work? It’s pretty simple, [...]

Airlock: Lock Your Mac with Your iPhone or iPod touch via Bluetooth

Use Your iPhone or iPod touch to Lock Your Mac [IPhone]

While I prefer to use a long password to protect my computer, I like the idea of being able to use a physical key to lock it. This is precisely what Airlock does, using your iPhone. It works great.

gawkerGallery(5421517,4,’Airlock Gallery’);

Airlock is a system preferences pane. Double-click to install it, associate it with your iPhone or iPod touch, set the security range, and that’s it. I tried with my iMac 24 and my iPhone and it worked perfectly. You can even see a radar screen showing the distance between the two devices. The moment I stepped out of the limit, the screen locked. And then, as soon as I came into the perimeter, it unlocked automagically.

There is only one problem: If you use a wireless mouse or keyboard, it won’t work due to a Bluetooth bug in Mac OS X. Otherwise, this thing will make you feel like James Bond.

Without the Aston Martin. And the Martini. And the laser watch. And the Scottish accent. And the hot girls. OK, so it won’t really make you feel like James Bond, but come on, get on with the program here. [Airlock via Unplggd]

Vostro V13: Dell’s New $450, 0.65-Inch Ultraportable [Dell]

There aren’t many details available about the Dell Vostro V13 other than the fact that it’s an ultra-thin, ultra-light ultraportable with a seemingly very reasonable $450 price tag, but at least there are a few teasing pictures. Updated: Hello details!

gawkerGallery(5421214,2,”);

The V13’s puny 3.5 pounds may include eSATA, Ethernet, USB and a card reader, but we’ll just have to wait for confirmation on the details. [Electronista]

Update: The V13 may be aimed toward business travelers, but based on the details, it wouldn’t be bad for the rest of us either:
• 13.3-inch screen
• An ultra-low voltage Core 2 processor
• 4GB of DDR3 RAM pre-loaded
• Bluetooth and 802.11g/n
• An integrated webcam and microphone

Not bad, though it looks like folks in New Zealand are getting the short end of the stick for some reason, since the expected price there converts to about $850. [PC World]

Orangutan Takes Photos, Shares Them on Facebook [Orangutan]

She’s like the Ashton Kutcher of the ape world: An orangutan in the Vienna Zoo now has a Facebook fan page to showcase the photos she takes with a digital camera.

The orangutan, named Nonja, uses a Samsung ST 1000 point-and-shoot that automatically uploads the photos.

When this post was published, Nonja had over 9,000 “fans” subscribed to her page.

But there’s a catch: Coverage of the camera-toting ape in the U.K.’s Daily Mail explains that the camera has been modified to dispense a raisin whenever the shutter button is pushed. So Nonja is evidently more interested in tasty treats than in artistic endeavors.

The non-orangutan version of the Samsung ST 1000 was released this summer (though not in the U.S.) and is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
