Unlocked Nexus One Comes to AT&T and Rogers

Today, Google announced that it is now selling a new version of the unlocked Nexus One that will work on AT&T and Rogers Wireless in 3G.

Earlier today, we discussed the lackluster sales of Google’s Nexus One smartphone. One of the reasons we think sales are below expectations is that the phone was previously only available on one 3G carrier in the U.S. and Canada.

While Google is still only selling the phone unsubsidized through T-Mobile, consumers now have two options when buying an unlocked handset. Both versions sell for $529. Additionally, the Nexus One can now be shipped to Canada from the Google web store.

This is a nice step and certainly offers up more carrier choices for the Nexus One, but it still isn’t an ideal solution. For instance, if you live in the United States, you are still going to be locked to one provider for all intents and purposes. If you want to use the phone on a 3G network, you’re still going to have to choose a version of the phone that will be incompatible with other carriers.

Yes, you can now choose to buy an unlocked device that will work with AT&T, but that same device will not work on T-Mobile, at least not in 3G. Likewise, the T-Mobile 3G unlocked phones will not work on AT&T’s network in anything other than EDGE.

European countries — where there isn’t an ongoing game of chicken taking place over not only wireless technology, but what frequency each operator uses — can continue to use either device on most networks, including support for 3G.

Our frustration with the lack of dual-band support for both North American 3G UMTS frequencies aside, this is still great news for anyone who wanted a Nexus One device, but needed to use it on a 3G network other than T-Mobile.

Does having the Nexus One available for AT&T make you more willing to consider buying the phone? Let us know!

More Droids Sold In First 74 Days Than iPhones – Nexus One Sales Very Slow

Mobile app analytics company Flurry estimates that while Apple sold 1 million iPhone devices in its first 74 days of availability on the market, the Motorola Droid actually shipped more devices during that timespan. Sales of Google’s Nexus One, by comparison, kinda stunk: the company only sold an estimated 135k phones in 74 days.

Flurry reaches its conclusions through applications using its solution for analytics reporting. Because applications embedded with Flurry are said to have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices, the company claims it can make reliable estimates about total handset sales.

Blackberry Users Look Longingly Toward iPhone and Android, Says Survey

A new survey of smartphone users paints a pretty grim picture for RIM and their Blackberry line of smartphones. According to market research firm Crowd Science, 40% of blackberry users plan to swap their device for an iPhone come the end of their contract. And it’s not just the iPhone that has these normally reserved business types excited. The survey also indicates that 32% would be willing to trade in their Blackberry for a Google Nexus One.

Crowd Science also asked about how people use their phones, and this may provide some insight into why people seem ready to jump ship. According to the report, people want to use their phones for both business and personal use. Only 16% of Blackberry users say they use their device for personal matters. About two thirds of iPhone users report using the phone for at least some personal and business exercises.

If RIM has any magic left, they might want to bring it to bear. In contrast, over 90% of iPhone and Android users planned to stay with their platform of choice come the next upgrade. Let’s hope Blackberry OS 6.0 can turn some frowns upside down. It’s going to take more than good keyboards to fix this.

TechCrunch links to noted developer Tim Bray who’s taking a position as “Developer Advocate” at Google for Android but who announces it while taking a swipe at Apple’s iPhone and the closed nature of the App Store:

Foursquare Hits 347,000 Check-ins in a Day

With legions of mobile, tech-savvy individuals invading Austin, Texas for SXSW, Foursquare experienced an extraordinary day yesterday, recording a record-breaking 347,000 check-ins.

In response to the boom in usage, the developers added a new badge called Super Swarm. There was already a badge called Swarm; it was awarded when 50 people checked in at the same location at the same time. Super Swarm is achieved when 250 people check in.

Foursquare guru Harry H. said, “Know what you call a 50 person swarm at SXSW? The Hilton Lobby. So we upped the ante to 250 and you still nailed it. Well played!” So yes, the badge has already been won, but it’s not a zero-sum game; head to a huge event like SXSW and you might get it, too.

Foursquare just turned one year old a few days ago, and its usage has shot up over the past three months. Very worthy competitors like Gowalla and Yelp may be putting up a fight against it, but as far as check-ins are concerned, Foursquare is on top right now. Only time will tell if it stays that way.
